Corrugated Roads

Corrugated Roads: A Bugger of a Kid 1950-1960 is about a young girl’s funny and sometimes heartbreaking interpretation of the tragic and just plain bizarre events in her family’s life in a drought-stricken Outback town in Australia’s 1950s. Told in 27 inter-linked short stories, Corrugated Roads: A Bugger of a Kid has been described by writer, Geoffrey Dean as “a gritty telling and a book I couldn’t put down. And, in spite of its serious subject matter, there is relief in the unexpected humour that arises out of the girl’s imaginative misconceptions about events beyond her experience.”

Neighbours. Story editor. Script editor. Writer. 300 x ½ hr episodes, plus. (Ch7-Ch10 1984-6). As story editor I created characters and storylines for Charlene Mitchell (Kylie Minogue), Henry Mitchell (Craig McLaughlan) and the rest of the Mitchell family, Mrs. Mangle (Vivien Grey) and her shadow husband.  Mike Young (Guy Pearce), ‘Plain Jane’ Harris, and many other memorable characters were initially created then developed by me over several scripts. After bedding them in, other writers were employed to write them for the serial. As my characters, stories and scripts have been novelized by the Grundy Organisation as well as providing endless inspiration for their writers and editors, I appear to be the gift that keeps on giving (without royalties, acknowledgement or payment).

My original ‘Charlene’ script and character breakdown, written at the kitchen table of my Bondi unit has been donated to The John Oxley Library, State Library of Queensland (Reference Code: 10147), together with over sixty Neighbours scripts plus other works. Charlene Mitchell Neighbours script
